Open Freight App an Open-source data and mapping template

Freight Forward

The RI Freight Finder is a project by the Rhode Island Division of Statewide Planning to share with municipal, regional, state, and private sector partners freight transportation planning data that will help inform future planning efforts. Through this effort, the Division of Statewide Planning hopes that municipal planning agencies, state agencies, and private sector partners can leverage this framework to further their efforts in making freight transportation data public and practical. This data and mapping platform should help users navigate freight information in Rhode Island and provides users with information about our freight highway corridors, railways, ports and harbors, airports, pipelines, navigable waters.

Freight planning is an important and ongoing component of Rhode Island’s transportation planning processes. Much of the data presented in the data and mapping application was developed during the creation of the 2016 Freight and Goods Movement Plan. This data was used as a base of information, and staff then updated old data and created new layers and updated layers created previously. All the data layers shown in this application will be made available on the Rhode Island Geographic Information System Website (RIGIS) at http://www.rigis.org/.

Municipal planners, freight operators, public officials, decision-makers and the general public are able to utilize this application to answer basic questions about the freight transportation network in Rhode Island. Additionally, the Division of Statewide Planning has developed a freight planning webpage which provides information about freight planning and the entire 2016 Freight and Goods Movement Plan is available for download.

The State of Rhode Island has a Freight Advisory Committee that meets quarterly to discuss freight issues of importance to the state and to serve as a forum for collaboration on transportation planning issues relating to freight and goods movement. All meetings of the freight advisory committee agenda are posted to the Secretary of State website http://sos.ri.gov/divisions/open-government in compliance with the Open Meetings Act.

RI Freight Finder

RI Freight Finder is built using the Leaflet JavaScript mapping library, a lightweight mobile friendly framework that provides developers an open flexible environment for the development of web maps and applications. The web application leverages the Bootstrap 3.0 front end framework for styling and interface. The application is at the core of the Rhode Island Division of Planning’s freight data program and provide partners with a way of accessing and exploring local freight data.

The Open Freight App Project is led by the RI Division of Statewide Planning. This open freight project can be further improved through feedback and collaboration as others begin to implement and explore new uses for the product. The current Open Freight Application build is intended to streamline the app development process by creating built in shortcuts. As this product is a "live" project updates will be provided periodically.
