State Planning Council

The Council oversees the Statewide Planning Program's work. The State Planning Council adopts goals and policies related to planning, most of which are contained within individual plans, as elements of the State Guide Plan. The Council has been designated as a single, Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for transportation planning purposes and, as such, adopts the two year program of transportation investments; the Transportation Improvement Program. As the Comprehensive Economic Development Committee for the state, the Council adopts an annual priority list of projects for consideration by the US Economic Development Administration. The body also advises the Governor on strategic planning matters and is required to ensure that major project and program proposals are consistent with the State Guide Plan.

There are 17 members of the State Planning Council representing a range of interests. They have created four standing committees to assist in the oversight of continuing operations.

Meetings
The State Planning Council holds monthly meetings, except July, usually in the Department of Administration Building, Providence.
